Coaching & Mentoring

Coaching & Mentoring

Everyone, at one point or another in their career, is faced with a tricky situation, or challenging issue which we simply can't deal with alone.  We may well have friends or other trusted advisors we can turn to.  But sometimes we may need a completely fresh angle, with perspective from someone who is more experienced and wiser and who has seen this kind of thing before. And that someone could be a mentor, or a coach.

If we had a magic wand, we'd love for ALL professional women to have a mentor, or occasional access to a professional coach.  The two aren't the same, and we feel it is really important that you are aware what each of them can deliver to you, how they can benefit your career and what to look for in either one.

That's why we created this theme.  Here, you'll find a wealth of articles about these two topics.  We wanted you to get multiple perspectives so we have brought various contributors on board.  We hope there's enough here for you to decide for yourself which would work best for you and to get going!

And...  we also hope we will inspire you enough to start mentoring someone yourself.  We have no doubt that every each and one of you has something to offer!

    First Foundation: Cheers and Tears

It's not often you cry at a corporate event, says Galia. The opening line to this article popped into her head as we were leaving the 10 Year Anniversary and Scholarship Awards of the First Foundation. The Foundation was set up to enable successful, resilient and 'go getter' students from low decile schools to go to university through partnering them with a company who pays most of their fees. Women are under-represented in senior positions in New Zealand. Managing Junior Staff

A lawyer wrote in: "I have been working for nearly 4 years and increasingly I supervise and support more junior staff. I'm sure I'm not alone in finding this really difficult. 'Big firms' don't seem to put much effort into training you in these skills and it seems like you are supposed to magically work it out. I'm far from being the 'boss' but I think these skills should develop as you go."
